Welcome
Welcome to Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir’s 2007-8 season. Our opening concert is a tribute to Edward Elgar, to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. I have always felt a great affinity for his music, partly because he can be found on an outlying branch of my family tree.

This season we are featuring the music of Will Todd. A jazz musician with a chorister background, he writes wonderfully energetic, engaging pieces that make great use of a choral jazz style. BSC will be singing some of his pieces at Christmas, and our May concert in Blandford will include his Mass in Blue, which has achieved extraordinary success since its première in 2004. For a chance to get to know this fabulous piece better, join us at our Come and Sing Day, where it will feature alongside the ever-popular Messiah.

Paired up with our Lent performance of the Messiah is another new piece, Roxanna Panufnik’s mesmerising Love Abide. A combination of words from the Sufi poet Rumi and the famous verses of love from Corinthians are given a unique, eastern treatment.

BSC’s Christmas Soirée at Canford has proved so popular over recent years that we are doing a repeat performance at the County Museum in Dorchester. As well as the usual carols, mulled wine and mince pies, there’s a chance to take a private peek at the fascinating museum. Book now!

February holds two exciting ventures for BSC. The first is a joint concert with Sherborne School for Girls to raise funds for the Richard Ely Trust’s work supporting young Dorset musicians. Later in the month, we will be singing the services in Salisbury Cathedral. With all these events, and the welcome return of our Summer Soirée, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to enjoy this year.
