Welcome to Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir’s 40th anniversary season.
It was in 1972 that the Western Orchestral Society asked Ken Montgomery to set up a chamber choir of the highest quality to work with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. Barry Ferguson became its first chorus master and the inaugural concert of Cavalli Missa Concertata and Haydn Te Deum in C took place in Romsey Abbey on June 6th 1972. In its first years the choir worked closely with the orchestra and also with a very young Simon Rattle as well as Rudolph Schwarz and Volker Wangenheim.
BSC has been independent of the orchestra for over 30 years and has flourished under four further musical directors – Nigel Carver, Rupert Jeffcoat, Howard Ionascu and currently David Gostick – all of whom have brought different strengths and repertoire to both choir and audiences.
Amid a huge range of concert venues and programmes performing both a cappella and with a wide variety of instrumental groups and soloists, the choir has enjoyed tours both here and in Europe, taking part in festivals, recordings and singing at notable events. The choir has regularly commissioned work and a recent highlight has been a collaboration with award-winning composer Cecilia McDowall to produce Five Seasons which we will perform again in June 2012 in our Gala Concert (NB Please note the change of venue for this event).
We look forward to seeing you at some of the exciting concerts we have planned to celebrate this special year.
