Choral works in 40 parts

Tallis • Spem in Alium
Roth • Earthrise
An opportunity to hear Spem in Alium is always a special occasion. In this wonderful work for eight separate 5-part choirs, Tallis demonstrates that he is more than a match for any continental composer of the period. It is only in live performance that you appreciate Tallis’s skill, as each of the 40 voices enters in turn, creating a sequence of constantly shifting tone colours.
The choir is delighted to return to the music of Alec Roth in a performance of his 40-part work Earthrise, written to be a companion piece to Spem in Alium, in which he meditates on the spectacular images of the earth gained from space.
As one reviewer remarked, “Earthrise is a fabulous 40-part unaccompanied choral work in three movements with the sort of poly-choral, lushly harmonised climaxes that send shivers down the spine.”
